Project: Golf Course Bunker Review System

The SSDM Golf Course Bunker Review System (GCBRS) has been developed to provide golf course Superintendents and Managers with an objective and impartial tool to assess and review the current condition and future management requirements of the bunkers throughout their golf course.

The review is based upon the following criteria:

  1. Historical performance
  2. Level of sand contamination
  3. Intensity of bunker washouts
  4. Burying potential
  5. Overland drainage
  6. Bunker design
  7. Internal drainage
  8. Sand depth and distribution

The first step of the review system is to walk the course and individually 'grade' each bunker against the criteria (identified above). This generates an overall score for each bunker which then enables the club to prioritise the needs of specific bunkers and also develop an appropriate management strategy to remedy these issues in an organised and transparent manner.

The aim of the GCBRS is to provide the club with an objective method of identifying, prioritising and budgeting for the neccessary improvements needed to enhance the playability, aesthetical appeal and management characteristics of their bunkers and in so doing minimise the likelihood of subjective opinion interfering or slowing down  the progress of this work.

After the initial review (and scoring) of the bunkers, the club will take full ownership of the GCBRS and be responsible for its implemenation and on-going development. SSDM will provide any neccessary support and administarive assistance regarding the future updating of the system as and when the club identifies the areas of priority.
